Books I Plan To Read This Summer

Monday, June 30, 2014

It is officially summer time, I hope you're all enjoying these longer days and summer nights. I have to admit that I tend to like cooler months more, as it gets too hot here, even in Northern California, but it does have it perks for sure. This summer, I plan to read a few books.

I am still currently working on Hyperion by Dan Simmons, which is a high science fiction/fantasy. I am halfway done, and am loving it so far.
I am also doing a re-read of Game of Thrones with other readers on goodreads. Some are new readers and some are re-readers like me. We are currently on Chapters 11-20. It's been fun so far.
If we get to finish that book, we will continue on to A Clash of Kings.
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is one classic I have been wanting to read. It's a mixture of suspense romance, and I think it could be good.
Next up is Burial Rites by Hannah Kent about a woman who was charged with murder and is sent to Iceland to await her execution.
Currently, I am about halfway done with Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rufka Brunt. I am loving it at the moment, and that cover is seriously beautiful.
Lastly, but certainly not the least, I plan to read a bit of some autobiography in the mix. Of course, what better way to start doing that than to read The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath? Sylvia Plath has always been an interesting figure to me, and I love The Bell Jar, so I wanted to read this too.

I might add in more books into the pile as the days go on, but so far, these are the books I plan to read and finish! What's in your summer TBR pile? Let me know.

  1. You have some great books waiting for you this summer! I am curious to see what you think of the Dan Simmons book. I saw his Abominable at the library last week but wasn't so sure yet.

  2. I loved Tell the Wolves I'm Home. I read it last year with my book discussion groups. I am also slowly rereading A Game of Thrones. I still haven't read A Clash of Kings though I have watched the TV series and know a lot of what happens going forward. I didn't know there was a readalong on Goodreads. I don't think I am far enough into the book to join in.

My summer TBR pile includes A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson (a book discussion selection for August), rereading Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series and Heroes of Olympus series in time for the release of The Blood of Olympus in October, and reading Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead when it comes out next month. I had hoped to reread A Game of Thrones too so I could start A Clash of Kings in the fall but we'll see. I bought book two a few years ago so it is about time that I read it! Maybe if I read one book a year for the next few years, I will be caught up in time for Winds of Winter if it ever gets published...

Good luck with your reading plans! I hope you enjoy the books :)

I have 17 books in my tbr pile this summer - one of them is the complete Sherlock Holmes, so that must count for more than one, but well... You can see my tbr pile here https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/4713275-irene?shelf=tbr-summer-2014
I'm especially excited about Fangirl, Cinder and Mini Shopaholic! :D

  7. Rebecca is a great one! But if you don't get it to it this summer it also makes a really great autumn read. The Bell Jar is one that I *need* to read soon!

  9. Sylvia Plath's journals are so intense! She was so brilliant - a genius. It is fascinating to read about her process of writing - her sheer productivity is daunting.

I've seen the great film "Rebecca" many times but have never read the novel. It's supposed to be terrific.

  11. I really thought I was going to start GoT this summer, but keep picking up other things -- my current thinking is that it would be better as a fall/winter "project" so I can catch up on the books before the next TV season airs. Have fun with your list!

& thanks for stopping by my GoT post the other day :)
