Latest Book Haul: Non-Fiction

Monday, March 23, 2015

I mentioned a few days ago that I've just been reading 'okay' books, and because of this, I wanted to pick up something great. Another blogger, Lindsey, gave me great advice: try something different from the usual books you typically pick up. So I did. I like a bit of non fiction every now and then, but for the most part, I like my fictional books. This week, I picked up two non fiction books just to change up the pace.

These two books have been on my tbr wishlist for a while, but I just have never gotten around to picking it up. Finally, I have it. The first book is the book I am actually currently reading and that's The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. This is a true crime historical book that is set during the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and centers around two men - the brilliant architect behind the fair and the serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death. I know. Intriguing, right?

The second book is more of a devastating one: Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel. He's pretty well known as a Holocaust survivor who writes and talks about his experiences at that time when he was sent to concentration camps.

Have you read these books? Any thoughts? And what were some of the latest books you bought? Let me know also some of your favorite non fiction books.

  1. I really liked the audio version of The Devil in the White City, but not sure if "like" is the right word for Night. It's good to break things up with nonfiction!

  2. I shamefully admit that I'm not a fan of non-fiction. I just can't get into them, usually. I'd say the only non-fiction/memoirs I do enjoy are by Jen Lancaster. I have to have something that keeps my interest, and she's hilarious and does a good job of that.

It is good to read something different once in awhile to shake things up! I just picked up a book that is outside of my norm - more of a paranormal type book, because I was bored and craving something 'different'. So far, I'm really enjoying it.

I hope you enjoy your new books!

    1. I think that's what's awesome about books, we can like whatever we want, so there's no shame in not reading certain books :) I agree that I don't read all non fiction and memoirs for the same reason you have. I have to really be invested in the story and the issues talked about.

  3. I was really moved by Night when I read it. I haven't yet read The Devil in the White City. It's one of those books that is forever on my to read list and yet never gets chosen. I hope you enjoy both!

I am not a big nonfiction reader either, although once in a while I find a nonfiction book I must read. I didn't read any last year and I hope to change that this year. I still haven't managed it yet, though.

  5. I have read Night and loved it! So touching, moving, and hard to read. I haven't read Devil in the White City but I read Larson's In the Garden of Beasts, which I loved. I do want to read Devil in the White City too.

    1. I just finished it, and I agree. Now I just keep watching videos on youtube that talk a bit about when the fair was actually happening. It's fascinating.

  7. In the Garden of Beasts and Isaac's Storm are two by Larson that I've read and re-read. They are great non-fiction options.
