i finally fed my addiction.

Saturday, April 10, 2010

You know when other people feel "naked" without a watch on their wrist? That's exactly how I felt yesterday when I discovered that I had zero books to read. It was sort of an unbelievable situation to be stuck in, and I felt that it didn't matter whether or not I was planning to read last night. The effect was automatic; I felt like I was stripped off a presence of something 'familiar.' I found that having books (and unread ones at that) around me was a source of a much-needed coziness -- a comforting little thing. So it felt really unfamiliar and odd to find no books around me at all.
As I said from yesterday's post, I was going to take a trip to the library and the bookstore ASAP. Today, that's exactly what I did. Here's the books I got!

Purchased:

1. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
2. The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan -- I finished the other four, maybe a month ago. But I decided not to read the last book yet because I didn't want the series to end. Haha.
3. Still Alice by Lisa Genova -- read this, and decided I have to have a copy of my own.

Picked up from the Library:
(you can click on the image to have a larger view)

1. Angelology by Danielle Trussoni
2. Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
3. A Ring of Endless Light by Madeleine L' Engle
4. Great Mischief by Josephine Pinckney

5. The Man Who Loved Books Too Much (non-fiction) by Allison Hoover Bartlett
6. Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
7. Make Lemonade by Virginia Euwer Wolff
8. Book of Greek Myths by D' Aulaires -- Yeah, you can blame Percy Jackson for this one.

9. Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles
10. The Lost City of Z by David Grann
11. Beautiful Boy by David Sheff
12. The Last Child by John Hart

Still on hold: Library books

1. The Complete Stories by Flannery O' Connor
2. Apologize, Apologize! by Elizabeth Kelly
3. The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
4. Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang by Chelsea Handler

There you have it for my loot for now! Have you read any of these? Let me know what you thought about it! My "TBR list" is a lot longer, like yours probably are, but I have yet to find my sources for them. One thing's for sure though; I will not let the 'not-one-book' situation happen again. Here's from a happy and satisfied bookworm wishing you had a great Saturday and an awesome read-a-thon -- if you're participating! Happy reading everyone!

my friday adventure.

You know when you've been working or maybe stuck at school for weeks straight and you don't do, or focus on anything else but that? It gets a bit.. uh.. stressful -- and boring -- doesn't it? That's exactly how I can describe the past work week that I just had. Yesterday though, I had a much-needed small adventure with someone who shares the same love for books and reading as I do. Our "hang-out" days, consists of a lot of things. But I noticed they almost always include unplanned trips to the bookstore or the library, vintage stores, coffee shops and cafes, and maybe a picnic -- if the weather will allow. Simple and not too spendy -- just the way I like it.

Here are some pictures that I got from the day. Feel free to skip, but just thought I'd share :)

Bookstore browsing

And for some vintage shop finds..
- I love visiting these kinds of places, and seeing the treasures that have been kept alive (and some, working) for years and years. Most of the stuff here are from the early 20s-60s.

Things I Couldn't Resist Getting:

These are special. I didn't even second guess myself. I knew I had to buy these composition notebooks from the (I'm guessing 20s-40s) from two different students. Both are boys. The one on the left includes a rough draft of a story about a sailor, trying to get his own boat. The other one on the right, is the one that made me buy. In it, was a poem written for a girl that he loved, but has passed away. The setting takes place in her funeral, and I don't want to ruin it, but I will try to copy it and post it up, because it truly is lovely.

My new favorite notebook :)
-- the covers are made of fabric with sewing of birds and their cage, tea cups, cupcakes, bows, and flowers. On the back cover, is the same style, but with an image of a tea pot.

And two books:
1. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
2. The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald
-- which were both on sale by the way ;)

I will now leave you with the last bit of randomness.
Meet few of my collection of vintage/antique glass bottles..

At night.

And during the day.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Weekend finds.

Sunday, February 28, 2010

There are two random things about me: 1) I have this obsession with owning pretty, vintage-y, classic looking books and 2) My favorite color is pink. On Friday, the book I received has both! I was surprised with a gorgeous copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from someone "just because." I have to say, it is the most perfect thing I have seen in a long time. It's too nice that I'm even afraid to open it for fear I might damage it!
To an average person, I am sounding crazy just about now, but if you are also a bookworm & a bibliophile, I'm sure you understand me and my crazy addiction. Haha.

(front & back)

Then today, I decided to go to Half Price Books again. I went in, telling myself I can not buy any more books. I did not succeed with my initial plan though, since I gave in and ended up buying 11 books! Total price though?
$12.05.
$12.05! How could I not buy?
They're all used copies, but don't look worn out at all. Isn't that amazing?
I love that store.

(11 books + the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland copy)

So yes, my weekend was interesting. I had a fun, adventurous, and productive Friday, and a really lazy Saturday. As for Sunday, it was a cross of two good things: lazy-productive, if that's even possible. Having said that, it was pretty a good weekend- add in a bunch of new books - and I can say it was pretty great.

Hope you had a great weekend as well! :)

Today's buys.

Today, I gave in and bought myself three lovely things. Although I did only have to pay for one (which was only $7.50) and let an awesome Barnes and Noble gift card (that I got for Christmas) pay for the rest.
  • Nightlight: a parody
- I have seen this title come up a lot in message boards and other blogs, and so today, I went out to get it. And yes, if you have already guessed, it is a parody of Twilight. This is written by The Harvard Lampoon, the undergraduate humor publication and social organization at Harvard University.
I'm halfway done, (hilarious from start to where I am) so review will be coming up soon!
  • Breakfast at Tiffany's DVD
- I actually can't believe I don't have a copy of this yet. And it was only $7.50 at Target!
  • Alice's Adventure in Wonderland
- I've read the short story version of this one a long time ago, but I am actually very disappointed to let you know that I have never read the actual novel written by Lewis Carroll. I will get to that as soon as I can as well.

In the meantime, I will leave you with this.
I know it has nothing to do with today's post but I thought of adding it in anyway. :)

today i saw..

the cutest things at Barnes & Noble! I usually don't go to B&N just because I buy my books usually online, or at other shops/stores. But I saw these and had to take pictures. I just used my phone so I'm sorry for the quality.
  • Right when I saw the notebook/journal thing, I said I had to get it! But when I looked at the back for the price, it was $14, and I know it's not exactly "expensive," but for the amount of pages that it had, I didn't think it was worth it.
  • This one is a book bag and the quote is just funny so I took a picture. But I don't really like the orange color, so I ended up not getting it.
  • This one! The front is on the left and the one on the right is the back part! It's $19, but it's just perfect! So I am thinking of going back to the store to get it (Christmas gift cards ftw!)

And here's the cutest one of all...
  • a puppy/book bookend! (Ignore the book display the store used) Unfortunately it was $49. hehehe.

that's all :)
