labor day reading + need help for school!

Sunday, September 4, 2011

It's Labor Day weekend! What better way to spend the 4-day mini-break we get to have than with these books? Let me know what you are currently reading, and what you're planning to read next this week as well!

I also wanted to take advantage of having this blog and ask you all for school help. For one of my classes, we're supposed to write a 10 page argumentative essay. Now, I need ideas from you guys - for ethical topics, preferably those that are controversial! The thing is, we can't write on abortion, marijuana legalization, and/or gay marriage (since our professor says everybody ends up doing their essays on those topics!) So... if you could kindly help me brainstorm, that would be AWESOME. Thanks, as always!

  1. I'm not very creative with topics. Those that come to my mind are affirmative action, Mandatory Healthcare, and voter id.

As for voter id... fewer than 10 states require picture id be shown when voting at the polls. Texas just passed a voter id bill and it was VERY controversial.

Sorry if my topics seem lame. Unfortunately, I'm a bit legal minded.

  2. ooh nice books you've got there! I just read a book that looked at the ethics of women from wealthy western countries using the surrogacy services of women from impoverished countries, so that's a topic that instantly comes to mind! Good luck with your essay :-)

  3. What about stem cells research? The only thing that comes to my mind right now.

    Good luck with the essay!

  4. I LOVE Alexis' idea. I think states should require id.

  5. My college room mate and I took a class together once and we had a similar project. We talked about memory erasure. There was another group that talked about euthanasia. Those would be interesting options.

  8. I hope you have a wonderful time reading!

I had one of my classes do some mini-research on hot topics, but I am trying to think of some that are ethics-based...one girl did hers on childhood obesity and how schools are interfering and whether that is ethical (undermining parents, etc).

You could also look into surrogacy. I know that has come under fire recently...I'll try and think of more and come back. :)

  9. Thank you for your topic ideas - I wrote them all down and am debating with myself, trying to pick out the right one for me!
Oh and is animal testing an ethical issue? I am not sure if it technically is!

  13. Nina - I am reading Forgotten right now, and woww.. I must say I am very, very intrigued by this story!!

Marce - I can't wait to read it - sounds great!

Hanna - I was thinking of that too, or possibly gay rights in general, although I do know that transgenders are not even "gay." It is an interesting topic - I have read up on it. Might be an option, thanks.
