Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

Genre: Middle Grade - Fantasy, YA
Synopsis: Percy Jackson, discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. He learns that the legendary being of Greek Mythology exist, and have always existed, including monsters, cyclopes, empousi, Titans, and the Greek Gods, including the Twelve Olympians themselves, who dwell on Olympus; now situation on the mythical 600th floor of the Empire State Building. The books talk about his many adventures.

Initial impression: Fun and simple MG novel. I do love anything mythology-related, especially Greek mythology, so I knew I'd find it interesting. But it ended up being one of the best reads of 2010 for me. And one of my favorite book series in the fantasy genre.

Why I Loved It: The characters are so awesome. Greek Mythology is awesome. The adventures here are awesome. The plot and character development... yup, awesome. You get it ;) These books are exciting, fast-paced, and just plain fun. It also cured my Harry Potter hang over a little bit. That's always good, right?

Why you might like it: For the same reasons why I did. And if you like Greek mythology, you'd enjoy this one.

  5. I LOVE this series! Awesome characters, exciting adventures and hilarious dialogue. Have you read the Kane Chronicles? I've only read the first but I really liked it (though not quite as much as PJO). Ooh, and The Lost Hero! I loved that one, too.

  6. I loved these books -- and so did my younger sister, who typically doesn't enjoy reading. The voice was hilarious, too.

I think these books are fun enough for anyone to enjoy them, but they're definitely so much sweeter when you're also a Greek mythology buff!

  8. I loved them for the Greek mythology, but I kept wishing they would somehow magically become as good as HP, but they never did.

  9. I just love Greek mythology, own all the books, and yet I have yet to actually have read them for some reason! Mainly it's because I just have so many books I need to read first, like review copies, that take precedence over a series that is already out. Also, I had the misfortune of seeing the movie and it was not a good experience, sorry to say. I hope it doesn't ruin the book reading experience for me. I really think that I will very much enjoy this series when I do eventually read it!

  10. I know this is a popular series but I haven't read it yet. I always saw the series as more for boys to read.

  12. Pepca - Would love to hear from you when you get to read it!

Misha - I definitely recommend it to you. It's a fun series.

cj - Must read!! Hope you like it.

Brooke - I was so excited when I first read the first book. Couldn't believe I found a new favorite!

The Story Queen - I have read the Kane Chronicles - definitely not as good though, but still have the same Rick Riordan writing style that I enjoy. I do like The Lost Hero a lot better! Maybe because I tend to favor Greek mythology over Egyptian.. hehe

Jenna - I agree - Percy Jackson is a fantastic narrator!

E - Yup, I agree! The Greek mythology aspect of it was so much fun and interesting.

Melissa - It's not as good as HP of course, but it was fun and very entertaining. Good writing too.

Aylee - oMG the movie was horribbbleee, I agree 100%! Please try it out and you will see how much better it is.

Jenny - It's definitely not for just boys, although I can see how it was probably more geared towards them.

HollyGal - You definitely should try it out!
