The Gargoyle

Sunday, January 10, 2010

The book starts off with the narrator getting into an accident, burning his body. The entire experience made him a cynic and made him lose his hope in life. He can’t wait to get out of the hospital to commit his planned suicide.

His nurse, by the name of Marianne Engel appears to him and tells him that they were once lovers. Back in the day. Way back in Medieval Germany. The narrator, as a hopeless cynic, does not believe her. But on the way to his recovery, Marianne Engel tells their love story that draws the narrator back to life. He begins to believe her, even like her. But the thing is, Marianne Engel only has a few chapters/scriptures left of the story until she vanishes and her time and purpose on earth is finished.

This is one of the most unique stories I’ve heard of. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like it. Correct me if I’m wrong. It has this gothic-like style, and the characters are simply mesmerizing. One positive thing I just have to rave about is the author’s writing. Wow. This is what you call art. This is what you call literature.

People need to grab this book immediately and read it. From page 1 until the very last, I was hooked. For two days that I read this book, it was like I was addicted. When I finished, it was like I was having withdrawals. I tried looking for books similar to this, but I just can’t find any.

This story is rare, interesting, and something that will keep you at the edge of your seat, leaving you wanting for more.. That’s what I want. More books from Andrew Davidson! Write more, please=]

Jane Eyre

Would you believe.

I, being a bookaholic, have never read Jane Eyre until April of 2008. That. is. a shame. I have always had the book put on hold, on my “to be read” pile. For some stupid reason, I never quite got around to actually picking it up and reading it. Finally, I did one time at 3am that April. I couldn’t sleep and the book was just next to me. I began to read. Eventually, I had to put the book down. I looked at the clock. It was 10am.

Jane Eyre is Jane Eyre, like they say. It is one of the most popular, influential, and oldest English book written by Charlotte of the famous Bronte sisters, whose legacy still live on to this day.

Jane Eyre is a first person narrative about an orphan; her lives, loss, defeat, battle, experiences, happiness, triumph, love, and accomplishment. We start when she’s only a child until she grows up.

I don’t know how to explain, but I will say that I now see why this book gets all the credit and praise of every book lover I have met. It’s classic and gothic-like. You can’t help but fall in love with Jane Eyre. Of course, who could forget about Mr. Rochester? A classic character bound to live on even until years later..

I really, really love this book. I love everything about it. Seriously, everything. I think everybody should read this masterpiece at least once in their lives.

The Thirteenth Tale

This is by far one of my favorite books of all time.

The Thirteenth Tale is a story about two women. One is a famous author who’s ill and whose life is soon coming to an end. Another is a young bookworm and bibliophile of a girl who lives a normal, simple life in her father’s book shop.

The famous author is notorious for giving false statements, made up stories, and lies to people who have interviewed her. But for some mysterious reason, she decides to write to the girl telling her that after many years of lies, she is now ready to tell the truth; the real story of her life, for the first time.

Diane Setterfield needs to write more because I’m going to keep buying all her books! They’re worth the money. Her writing is nothing less than exquisite. It has a gothic feel to it, reminiscent of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre.

This is the kind of book that I will definitely recommend again and again, most especially to lovers of great literature and profound writing.

The story is mysterious, addicting, unique, and exciting. There are many twists and turns; you have to keep reading. I found myself lost in the book by the first page until the end. It kept me trying to guess what was going on, as I kept thinking, that something was just off here. In the end, when it all tied up and the ending is revealed, I was pleasantly surprised. I did not see it coming. I don’t think anyone can. It was great.

If you enjoy a really good story with realistic, lovable characters, intricate descriptions, and events that will keep you guessing, try this one. You can not be disappointed.
