me? getting a tattoo??

Friday, July 22, 2011

I haven't really told anyone about this, but for the past few years now, I've been thinking about getting a tattoo. Yup, a real one. The permanent kind. The one that grows old with you and never changes kind. The thing is, if you knew me personally, you could NEVER imagine me actually getting one!

But don't get excited; this is just an idea. I doubt I would actually go through with this plan, since I'm too much of a chicken to do it. But hey, if I still feel this way by this time next year, maybe I'll really go through it. For now, this is a tattoo idea stuck in my dreams.

They would be on my wrists. It will be small and subtle. It would be of a book on the left wrist, and a quill on the right.

Just thinking about it makes me all giddy for some reason!! And I truly believe that that design idea screams my name.

Would you ever get a tattoo? A literary tattoo perhaps? Or maybe you already do have one. Tell me!!

  1. As of now, the only tattoo I'd consider are literary tattoos! I love the book and quill idea.. i pretty much love all tattoos having to do with books! :p Oh, and HP tattoos <3 I'd love to get a quote, or maybe just the word "words" for sentimental reasons :p but i'm 'much too young' anywho.. if you get a tattoo you gotta post about it! =D

  2. Hey Jillian - the book and quill design sounds interesting.

I have three tattoos at the moment - a stylised celtic inspired dragon on my left ankle, an angel with a sword on my right ankle and a celtic knot with angel wings on either side on my lower back (I know it's a tramp stamp, but I love it!). I have thought about getting a literary inspired tat done, but I haven't found a design that I love yet or decided where to put it.

It's a good idea to wait until you're sure what you want. Then it'll be a design you love and will happily carry with you.

  3. Hi there! I have one small tattoo of a seahorse on the inside of my left leg, just above my ankle, I got it when I turned 18 and fourteen years later I still love it. I plan to get more, but will take my time until I know I've got it right. I love them, and love your idea of a book and quill. I think the key is choosing something that is really meaningful for you, not just fashionable at the time, because then you really will love it forever.

  4. Go for it! But careful... it's addictive :) I have mine for over 12 years and never regretted it.

  5. Audrey - 'WORDS' would be an awesome tattoo, I agree. I'd probably put that on the back of my neck. Also, if I would ever get a harry potter inspired tattoo, it'd probably be, MISCHIEF MANAGED!

Shelagh - I doubt I would really go through with this plan, but it's nice to think about it! and hey, who knows, right? :) Anyway, those tattoos sound really cool and interesting - I'd love to see!

mummazappa - I agree 100%. The tattoo needs to be something you're in LOVE with, not something others will think is cool or fashionable. I think many make this mistake though, sadly! For me, I don't think I will ever ever regret a book&quill tattoo :)

Selina - Haha I probably won't for it if I'm truly being realistic, but hey, who knows.

  6. I've considered getting a tattoo for a long time now. I'm pretty sure I'm going to muster up the nerve to do it on my next birthday. Me and my Dad want to get matching ones... we had the idea of taking Jack Sparrow's tattoo of the sparrow with the sun and the ocean, and making it a bit more unique to us. :) So we'll see!

  7. Untouchable Treasure - Aww that is the sweetest thing :) I think you should totally go for it!!

  9. I have been mulling it over for 12 years whether to get a tattoo or not, and if so what kind, and I have finally narrowed it down to getting a literary one. I like the idea of an open books with words and letters whirling up from the pages. The problem is that the people at the tattoo parlour I would go to don't design tattoos but expect you to bring your own designs, so I'd have to draw it myself or get someone to do it for me, and I am not good at representational drawing and I don't know any artists. But I'll get there, even if I have to wait until I'm 90.

  10. very cool idea, I like that.

I have 4 tattoos, my 1st over 10 years, definitely get something you love and has meaning to you which what you chose sounds perfect.

I have my last name on my wrist, charmed sign on the curve of my shoulder (represents my daughter, one of the charmed sisters, lol), the eye of horus on my hip and a personal one on my chest.

Tattoos are very addictive. I want to get the Serenity Prayer now.

    Go For It!!!!

  11. I love your idea of the book and quill! I currently have one, I got it when I was 18 and I still adore it now that I'm 27. I took forever deciding what to get and where and I did it for me. A lot of people don't even know I have one, which I also kinda love. If you decide to do it, make sure it's exactly what you want, but it's something I've never regretted. I've thought about getting another one and probably will at some point.

  12. I got mine 10 years ago after thinking about it for 10 years. I don't regret it at all, but I also don't regret thinking about it for 10 years ago. A friend in college had one removed, and it was very expensive, very painful, and went on for years. That was a good thing to witness beforehand.

  13. I'm pretty sure I will never get a tattoo-- but if I did it would be literary. Choosing would be very difficult and I'm constantly evolving-- so yeah, no permanent tattoos for me. The removable fashion kind are lots of fun though-- I have a gorgeous peacock tattoo that is wearing off right now. ;o)

Oh yeah, me and DeLynne's other bookworm best friend from age 13 on, Karen, is a tattoo artist who wins Best in Austen (tx) every year-- isn't that funny. She is covered in tattoos but neither of us have one.

If any of y'all are in Tx and want to get a literary tattoo from an intuitive bookworm tattoo artist-- let me know--- and you don't have to bring in your own design.

  14. Pretty!

    Good luck!

    I have several.

My advice: keep it small and keep it meaning to you :)

  15. Tattoos are so much fun (and a bit addictive) and I think they show the soul of a person.

What I would suggest before you get a tattoo is get a henna of the piece on that area to see if you can handle looking at the same thing day in and day out for a couple of weeks.

That's what I did before my wrist pieces.

Besides my wrists, I have a finger tattoo and an ankle tattoo! (http://www.thehummingbirdhollow.com/2011/06/tattoos-for-thursday.html)

And awesome blog post, BTW. I'm new here.

  16. I love tattoos. I want one too, but I'm not sure what I want. I really want to get one when I'm done with school. ;)A bird for freedome. I'm still thinking about it. I love that bird thing, but my only worry is that when you get older it's going to look like something else. You know! :)

  17. Laura - 'Almost ready' sounds good. Would love to find out when you finally get it!

Bibliophile - The books with the words idea sounds fantastic!! I would suggest you ask him to draw you samples before tattooing it on you, or you can find a specific book image online and show it to him. Make sure you both understand your vision! Good luck :)

Marce - Ohhh 4 tattoos? That's awesome :) And the last name idea would be great too, except my last name's kinda long. Haha

Melissa - Very cool! What is the tattoo??

Jessica - I'm extremely indecisive as well, so I KNOW I have to think about this for a very very long time. You could also get it on the back of neck, since it doesn't show as much with your hair down!

Carin - Yeah something as huge as this, I feel like you really have to think about it again and again and again! I would not to live with regrets!

Lesa - What's funny is, I sort of think I'm pretty sure I would never actually go through with this plan. But it's nice to think about it and believe I'd someday be able to!

Juju - Thank you! Yes, I definitely want a small one, barely there, kind. And the books and the quill definitely means sooo much to me.

Becky - Ohh that's a VERY good idea. Don't know why I didn't even think of it? Haha. And thank you for visiting!! :)

Nina - Aw that would be really cute! If you look it up, there are so many bird/birdcage tattoos! Everyone of them looks adorable and cute.

  18. @Jillian.

I'd defintley recommend it to anyone looking to get a tattoo. It helps to know if you really want something on your skin.

Another idea I've heard is having it displayed somewhere were you can see it every day for six months, and if you still want it after that, get it.

  19. Great Idea! :)
I would love to get a literary tattoo too! But I am too much of a coward to actually get one done. If I could, I would get a Game of Thrones tattoo - I am obsessed with the series currently, both the books and the TV show.

  20. Thats a cute idea for a tattoo.
I do have a small one on my inner ankle, and if I had to do it over, I probably wouldn't have :( Thank goodness it's small! lol

  21. Becky - Thank you for the advice!!

Misha - Haha I too am a coward sadly! And I love Games of Thrones too! So good!

naida - aw sorry you sort of regret it! But yes, at least it is small.
